The Mariner softball team opened their season by winning two out of three games. They started with a 9-2 win at home over Mountain Iron-Buhl on April 6. Then they went to Esko and were beat 10-0 in five innings on April 7. They followed that up with a 19-1 five inning win in Grand Marais over the Cook County Vikings on Tuesday.

The Mariner's three run first inning ended up giving them all the runs they would need versus the Rangers. The Mariners had eight hits in the contest and drew 10 walks. Jocelyn Russell and Brooke McMillen each walked and scored when Cora Carter reached base via a Ranger error. Carter then scored on a Jesse Ketola single and it was 3-0 in favor of the Mariners. The Mariners added two more in the second, when Everly Bauck walked, McMillen singled and a double from Carter scored them both.

The Rangers cut it to 5-2 with two runs in the top of the third. A single by Morgan Dircks scored both runs. Bauck scored on a Ketola sacrifice fly in the fourth and the Mariners pushed three more runs across the plate in the sixth. Megan Maxey, Sylvia Davey and Callie Klemmer had back to back to back singles to score two and the other scored on a bases loaded walk to Russell.

Bauck pitched the first three innings giving two runs on two hits and struck out six. Carter pitched the final four innings and picked up the win. She gave up two hits and struck out five. Abby White took the loss for the Rangers. Ketola and Carter each drove in two runs and Bauck, McMillen and Carter each scored twice. Klemmer had three hits and McMillen had two.

At Esko, Emilee Wilson threw a one hitter and kept the Mariners off the board. She finished with nine strikeouts. The Mariner gave up three runs in the first when the first three batters reached base and scored the Eskimos only earned runs. They gave up six more later when they twice gave the Eskimos an extra out. The Mariners had five errors in the game. Hannah Stark had a two run inside the park homer for Esko in the second inning and two batters later Davriana Horvath put one over the fence for another two run shot. The Eskimos ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when they executed a suicide squeeze. Carter took the loss for the Mariners and Kayla Klofstad had their only hit.

Bauck pitched three innings to pick up the win at Grand Marais. Carter went 2-for-2 with two doubles, drove in four runs and scored three times. Ketola went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and scored twice.
