Radio Activity: Scenic Route rides radio light rail

Host Jackie Rennwald describes her Monday morning show, "The Scenic Route," as an upbeat mix of news, weather and music of many genres, from music popular in decades past to classic country and big band. Part of KTWH's early morning Grounds Control series, she shares the spotlight during the week with DJ's Anderson, Babeu, and Miller. There is a rotating guest host each Friday to round out the lineup.

After her Grounds Control segment has completed, she then launches the hour long Scenic Route Detour. Asked to describe this show she says, "It is a fun, quicker-paced program that is neither Duluth-centric or corporate in nature. I try to keep the music and the on-air commentary light and whimsical. It is a great way to ease into Monday and the week ahead." Always willing to broaden her horizons, she devoted a good portion of one recent episode to playing Grateful Dead selections, a band she was only vaguely familiar with before the broadcast.

A radio veteran, Jackie's first job was at a pop music station in Mankato. A move to Fort Wayne, Ind., with her soon to be husband provided a fortuitous opportunity as a bout of impatience and boredom landed her a job at WBTU. Having nothing to do the day before her scheduled interview, she walked into the station to say hello. That station had recently lost an employee or two and put her to work immediately due to her prior experience.

Jackie's involvement in making Two Harbors Community Radio a reality was just as happenstance. As a volunteer at the local food shelf, she one day overheard THCR board member, Fran Kaliher talking about 'community radio.' That was enough for her to tune into the conversation and make inquiries about the project. She recently completed a two-year stint as a board member, and her Scenic Route program was part of KTWH's inaugural lineup. She says of her attraction to broadcasting, "I like radio's spontaneous nature, its theater of the mind aspect, and the adrenaline rush of performing live."

The Scenic Route airs each Monday from 7-9 a.m. The Scenic Route Detour airs Monday at 9 a.m. and is rebroadcast Sundays at 6 p.m.

KTWH-LP, 99.5 FM, is a volunteer run non-profit serving the town of Two Harbors and surrounding area with a broadcast range of 10 miles. It streams online at ktwh.org.
