Nurse's view: Slaying the germ monster

If you think the toilet is the absolute dirtiest place in your house, Lake County, then read on. Your kitchen sink is the place where you wash the chicken (think salmonella) fruits and vegetables (think e-coli) and then soak the dirty dishes. Every time I see something soaking, I think of a Petri dish. Germs love moisture.

The sink is the only place Gertie will allow you to spray some diluted bleach. According to the CDC, you should use 1/4 cup bleach in 2-1/4 cups water. Use this procedure to keep bacteria at a minimum.

  • Carefully pour bleach mixture into a clean spray bottle.
  • Spray the sink, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it clean and dry with paper towels.
  • Put the drain strainers through the dishwasher each time you run it.

Throw away the sponges that trap and grow bacteria. Instead use an antibacterial or a lightweight cloth that dries quickly between uses. Remember that when you dry something, you are preventing germs from multiplying.

If you don't want to use bleach, just wash with soap and water and dry with paper towels.

Your dirty clothes hamper is another area that has a lot of germs. This is due mostly to the undergarments. It doesn't help when someone adds a damp towel or washcloth. Remember how germs love warm, moist, dark places? Hampers can be a perfect venue for a bacteria party. Try these tips for keeping germs from multiplying and invading the rest of your home.

  • Hang the towel or washcloth to dry before putting it in the hamper.
  • Each time you handle dirty laundry, be sure to wash your hands! Washing your hands is the single most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of germs.

In sum, the TV remote, computer keyboard, and cell phone all have more germs than the toilet. So go ahead and let Fido have a drink. He'll get exposed to more germs fetching the remote!
