Experience Split Rock, Gooseberry Falls by candlelight

Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse state parks, Two Harbors, are hosting candlelight winter activities for the public in February.

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park will host candlelight hiking and snowshoeing Saturday, Feb. 3, from 6-8:30 p.m. Begin at the Trail Center and follow the glowing luminaries as you hike or snowshoe the 2-mile, self-guided trip to Day Hill.

The majority of the trail is suitable for beginner-level snowshoers or hikers of all ages. A portion of the trail to Day Hill includes a short steep hill section.

A bonfire and marshmallows await visitors partway through the trail. Enjoy hot beverages and snacks at the Trail Center.

Note that winter events may sometimes be changed or canceled due to weather. Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is located 20 miles northeast of Two Harbors on state Highway 61.

Gooseberry Falls State Park

Gooseberry Falls State Park will host candlelight skiing, snowshoeing and hiking Saturday, Feb. 17, from 6-8:30 p.m.

Candle luminaries guide visitors on several miles of ski, snowshoe and hiking trails. Begin at the Visitor Center and follow the glowing luminaries to the along the trail. A bonfire and marshmallows await visitors at Lady Slipper Amphitheater. Hot beverages and snacks are available at the Visitor Center.

A vehicle permit is not required at Gooseberry Falls State Park's Visitor Center parking lot. Visitors who want full access to the park can purchase a vehicle permit at the park or buy one in advance at mndnr.gov/reservations.

Those age 16 and older will also need the Great Minnesota Ski Pass if they plan to cross-country ski. Passes can be purchased at the park or by calling 888-665-4236 or visiting mndnr.gov/skipass.

In the case of severe weather, the event may be changed or canceled.

Gooseberry Falls State Park is located at 3206 state Highway 61.
