School Board approves 2016-17 calendar
The Lake Superior School District formally approved the calendar for the 2016-17 school year. There are several changes for next year that include a shorter winter break, an earlier spring break, another, shorter break around the Easter holiday and the school year will begin Sept. 6 and end June 8, 2017.
The winter break will begin Dec. 23 and students will return Jan. 3 after a teacher workday Jan. 2. The workday, according to Superintendent Bill Crandall, could be changed to another day if there are better opportunities for teacher development.
Spring break will begin Feb. 17, just before President's Day, next year and students will return to school Feb. 27 and then will get a five day break around the Easter holiday in April.
The only Friday students are scheduled to be in school next year is June 2, 2017, just after the Memorial Day.
Also at the meeting, it was announced the district received the School Finance Award for fiscal year 2015 from the Minnesota Department of Education. The award recognizes timely submission of financial data and compliance with Minnesota statutes, the presence of select indicators of financial health and the accuracy of reporting. There were 409 out of 563 eligible reporting entities that received the award.
Finally, the board met with the Cook County School Board Thursday to discuss the issue of Crandall also serving as that district's superintendent and the different options for his compensation and time commitments, too late for the News-Chronicle's deadline.
