Art exhibit at Vanilla Bean

An exhibit of watercolor paintings by artists Bob Astrup and Richard Graves opens on June 16 at the Vanilla Bean Café in Two Harbors.

The exhibit will consist of two shows, the first runs from June 16 through July 13 and the second show runs from July 14 through August 17.

Astrup of Columbia Heights, began painting after his retirement from teaching history and English in Mounds View schools.

He is a member of the Northstar Watercolor Society and has studied with Tom Lynch, Eric Wiegardt, Frank Francese, Carla O'Connor, and Frank Webb among others. Astrup exhibits in Gulf Shores, Ala., at the annual mid-May Art on the Line Show at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds in St. Paul, and other locations.

Richard Graves was raised in the Minnesota Red River Valley and today lives in Roseville, Minn.

Graves' topics for paintings are varied, but are primarily landscapes, seascapes, and those of architectural elements. His international and domestic travel in Central and South America, the U.S., Africa, Europe and the British Isles provide endless subject matter for this artist.

His paintings are fresh and bold; his method is to use "tons" of pigment in hopes of getting maximum brilliance with a minimum number of brush strokes.

The Vanilla Bean, located on Highway 61 in Two Harbors, is open daily from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
