Local election filing period ends

The last round of election filings for local positions around Lake County ended Tuesday.

Silver Bay, Beaver Bay, Crystal Bay Township, Beaver Bay Township and Lake Superior School District had filing periods end on Tuesday. In Silver Bay, Scott Johnson is the only one currently running for the mayor position. There are two at-large positions on the Silver Bay City Council up for grabs this November. Incumbents Dustin Goutermont and Carlene Perfetto will be going up against Patrick Ramsdell, Ken Smith and former school board member Carol Youngberg for the two seats.

The LSSD School Board has three seats up for reelection with no incumbents filing for their seats. Al Ringer has filed for the District 3 seat currently held by Dwight Moe. The District 4 seat, currently held by Cyndi Ryder will have no names on the ballot as no one filed for the seat. Mark LeBlanc, who reigned from the School Board Tuesday after moving out of District 1, has filed for the District 6 seat currently held by Shannon (Fabini) Klinker. LeBlanc's District 1 seat will also be on the November with the filing period ending Thursday.

All of the open seats in Beaver Bay, Crystal Bay Township and Beaver Bay Township have people running unopposed on the ballot. In Beaver Bay, Linda Malzac is running for mayor and Jenni Viken, Gene Walsh and Ruth Maki are running for three different at-large seats. In Crystal Bay Township, Pamela Melby is running for Town Supervisor Seat A, David Abazs is running for Seat B, Paul Hartshorn is running for Seat C, Debra Johansen is running for Town Clerk and Lise Abazs is running for Town Treasurer. In Beaver Bay Township, Teddy Youngberg is running for Town Supervisor Seat B and Mary Jane VanDenHeuvel is running for Town Clerk.

Also during the Aug. 2-16 filing period, those living in Two Harbors Ward 2 were able to file for a special election. The Ward 2 seat on the Two Harbors City Council was left open after Roger Simonson passed away. Three people filed for the seat and will be going against each other in November. Those running are Jacob D. Nelson, Mary Henjum Rosati and Frank McQuade.

The general election is on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
