THHS athletes compete for turkeys
The Two Harbors High School sports teams are competing against each other off the field for a good cause.
This year, the Two Harbors Area Food Shelf announced that they wouldn't have access to free or low-cost turkeys to fill their pantry for the holiday season and has asked the community to step up and help out. That's just what the THHS cheerleaders and cheer squad decided to do. The girls got together and came up with the Tacky Turkey Trophy.
The cheerleaders, boys basketball team, girls basketball team and nordic ski team are competing to see who can get the most turkeys for the food shelf. Every time a team gets a turkey or a $20 donation, they get a turkey on the wall at the high school. Whoever has the most turkeys by Dec. 2 wins the Tacky Turkey Trophy.
The food shelf gives out around 160 turkeys over the holiday season and the teams want to be able to reach that goal. They will be dropping off the first load of turkeys at the food shelf today and will make as many runs as necessary before Thanksgiving.
"The food shelf obviously needs these turkeys and I'm pretty proud of all of the these teams for stepping up," said athletic director Scott Ross.
The school is asking that people who want to donate do so through a student they know that is on one of the teams. Otherwise, they can drop off the donation at the high school office and dedicate it to one of the teams. The students are asking for either a whole turkey or a $20 donation via cash, check or Super One Foods gift card so they'll be able to pick up a turkey from the store.
Arrangements can also be made to pick up a donation if neccessary. For more information, contact Melanie Ross at 830-2123.
