Lack of snow brings challenges for Two Harbors Nordic ski team

The Two Harbors Nordic ski team is facing an epic problem this season: no snow.

Co-head coach Sara Bryns said the team has been concentrating on dry land training which can involve running, rollerblading, and strength training. "It's been challenging to get ready for meets without practicing on snow," she said.

"I think that morale is hard to keep up when the kids join the ski team to ski and they end up having to do a lot of running and other activities aren't skiing," Bryns said. "It's hard especially for new kids that haven't had a chance to ski to stay interested and stick with it when we haven't been able to get on skis yet."

But the ski team has managed to participate in two competitions so far. At the Grand Rapids Invite Saturday, Savannah Juenemann came in 25th out of 44 for the varsity girls while Owen Cruikshank came in 35th out of 48.

At the Denfeld Invite Tuesday Kiersten Haaversen came in 3rd out of 25 for the varsity girls while Owen Cruikshank came in 16th place out of 26. Haaversen is also competing in the Junior Olympics ski trials.

The team is expected to compete in the Ely Classic Saturday. But if there is not enough snow, it will be rescheduled to take place in Grand Rapids Dec. 20.
