Bayside chatter: First cut is the deepest

The Mariners lost their first game of the season 39-15 to the Bigfork Huskies. They are at Littlefork-Big Falls tomorrow afternoon for the fifth game of this season. Then they host Mountain Iron-Buhl for homecoming and travel to Cook to play North Woods.

The Big North Conference has divided itself into three tiers. At the top you have North Woods, Bigfork, and Mountain Iron-Buhl. Following them is Silver Bay, Northeast Range, Littlefork-Big Falls, Southridge, and Cherry.

North Woods has all but wrapped up the conference title with wins of 50-42 and 38-29 over Bigfork and Mountain Iron-Buhl. Bigfork has a 34-29 win over Mountain Iron-Buhl. North Woods had to score the final 16 points of the contest at Mountain Iron-Buhl for the victory. It means these three teams are pretty evenly matched.

Northeast Range has won three in a row since their opening season loss to the Mariners, but they have yet to take on any of the big three.

Section 7 has North Woods, Bigfork, and Mountain Iron-Buhl battling it out for a berth in the state tournament in what should make for some great games. In Section 5, McGregor, Floodwood, and Silver Bay are all at 3-1 -- the only winning records in the section. The latest computer rankings have McGregor at 17, Silver Bay at 18, and Floodwood at 22. North Woods is No. 4 and Bigfork is at 14.
