Lake County land sale Friday

Eight pieces of Lake County land will be on the auction block next Friday.

Seven pieces of tax-forfeited county land and one piece of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources land will be auctioned off at the Law Enforcement Center in Two Harbors.

"They're all really nice," land commissioner Nate Eide said, adding that many include lakeshore.

The starting bid for the land is based on the appraised value of the parcel - for tax-forfeited county land, bidding starts 10 percent below that price, DNR land will start at appraised value. Bids increase in $100 increments and a down payment is required when a purchaser wins the bid. The amount of the down payment varies by parcel, but is usually 10-20 percent of the total bid.

Tax-forfeited land is property that has been returned to the county for non-payment of taxes. Land sales offering tax-forfeited properties are typically held annually. Land auctioned by the DNR has been determined unnecessary for natural resource management purposes.

Eide said that land sales aren't typically popular, but he's hoping for a good turnout next week, especially with some of the picturesque land that is available.

Land that isn't sold at the sale will be available for 180 days after the auction at the starting bid price.
