Health Notes: High school, health care partner in Two Harbors

A partnership among a high school, a hospital and a nursing home hopes to provide careers for high school graduates while filling a need in Two Harbors.

A class for current high school students and graduates that begins Feb. 11 will prepare students for state nursing assistant certification, a news release from Lake View Hospital said. The hospital is joining Two Harbors High School and Ecumen Scenic Shores nursing home in presenting the course. It will take place on Saturdays and after school hours, making it available for current students. It continues until April 5.

Nursing assistants comprise one of the fastest-growing occupations in Minnesota, the news release said. The number of nursing assistants in Northeastern Minnesota is projected to rise by 25 percent between 2010 and 2020 as the number of people in their 70s and older continues to grow.

A driving motivation behind the partnership is the desire to make it easier for residents to get training in the community where they live, the news release said.

Classes, taught by instructors from Mesabi Range Community and Technical College, will take place at Lake View Hospital, and clinical rotations will take place at Ecumen Scenic Shores, both in Two Harbors.
