Lake County Past spotlight: The Great Kirma

From 1939

Booked for a solid week of personal appearances at the Harbor Theatre, The Great Kirma, internationally known mystic, will perform a number of free outdoor stunts on Two Harbors streets, Donald Grengs, local impresario, announced. The first will be a blindfold drive of a new Ford car. This psychic demonstration is under auspices of Sonju Motor Co., Two Harbors dealer handling both Ford and Mercury automobiles.

City officials will attend the Ford demonstration, and will assist in blindfolding Kirma. The start will be from in front of the Sonju headquarters on First Avenue, the finish at the Harbor Theatre. Many from out of town are expected to witness the feat, which has won the mentalist wide acclaim in other cities.

During the blindfold drive, Kirma will stop at the establishments of a number of local merchants. At several stops other psychic stunts are planned, such as burning a refrigerator and causing it to emerge unharmed; painting a chair blindfolded, etc.

Late in the week, at a store to be announced in next week’s Chronicle, Kirma will hypnotize a beautiful girl via a radio set. The girl will remain in the window on exhibition for 24 hours, then will be removed to the stage of the Harbor Theatre and awakened in view of the audience.

A special matinee for ladies only will be held and a midnight séance will be given in connection with a motion picture. The title of the séance is “Can The Dead Return?” a question, advance notices state, that is answered in the negative by Kirma, who offers a substantial reward if he cannot duplicate by mechanical means any trick of bogus mediums. On stage, Kirma answers questions from members of the audience without seeing the questions.
