Ski slide ready on Crusher Point

A very good ski slide has been built on Lighthouse Point near the site of the old city rock crusher which will give outlet to the energies of the young folks. The slide has been built under the direction of Veikko Engelin, with the assistance of “Tody” Holliday, Walter Ojay and Henry and Joseph Strand.

Winter Frolic wins approval and program is set

Sales of tags and tickets for the 1939 Winter Frolic reflect a very popular feeling towards what is becoming an institution in Two Harbors. The candidates for the honor of frolic queen are entering the contest with enthusiasm. The crowning will be Sunday, Jan. 29. Art Sullivan, chairman of the program committee, has secured a spectacular show for Sunday, which includes the leading fancy skaters of Duluth, who will appear with the Duluth Curling Club troupe. The program for Saturday, not yet complete, includes sled races, sit up and coast, shove and coast, speed skating and boys’ hockey. The events will begin at the municipal rink at 2 p.m.


To require seat belts in new cars

Thinking of buying a new car after the first of the New Year? One of the changes in traffic law of the last legislative session will affect you. This is the requirement for seat belts in the front seat of passenger cars. Safety leaders had proposed a bill requiring all cars to be equipped with safety seat belts in the front seat for driver and passenger. The proposal was amended to provide for local installation of seat belts within 30 days after the new passenger vehicle is registered in Minnesota effective Jan. 1, 1964.

Numeral system to be installed

Starting next week, Silver Bay, Beaver Bay and Finland will join the growing list of communities throughout the nation using the new seven numeral telephone numbering system exclusively. Fingal Melin , the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company manager, said telephone numbers of all customers will be shown as seven numerals in the new telephone directory to be delivered next week.


Local rink wins state crown

A Two Harbors rink won the Minnesota State Seniors Curling Championship at the St. Paul Curling Club on Sunday. The team, skipped by Earl Meyer, with Rudy Pluth, Louis Bangsund and Wayne Dahl won in the final game 8 to 7 over a St. Paul rink. The format was a modified round robin. Two Harbors had a 5 and 1 record. This team also holds the U.S. National title and will be defending it in Mankato, Feb. 9-12.
