Eh? Free smoke detectors in January

ArcelorMittal, the steel company that owns the Minorca taconite operation in Virginia, has given a grant to the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross to buy and give away 100 free smoke detectors to area residents.

You read right; they are free.

The effort is aimed at promoting fire safety in the depths of winter when most of the region's structure fires occur, thanks to heating systems, wood stoves and fireplaces.

Starting Jan. 2, Kidde smoke detectors equipped with 10-year sealed lithium batteries will be given on a first-come, first-served basis (one per family) at the Northland Chapter office at 2524 Maple Grove Rd. in Duluth and at the United Way of Northeast Minnesota at 229 W. Lake St. in Chisholm. For more information, call (218) 722-0071.
