CALENDAR SPOTLIGHT: scene painting workshop begins

The Lake Superior Community Theatre is asking for volunteers to help with set painting for their spring production of "Grease." Set painting will begin Nov. 17 in the William Kelley High School auditorium. Those with questions about volunteering should call 218-353-7509.

The Lake Superior Community Theatre will hold its annual scene painting workshop with esteemed Duluth set designer and scene painter, Ann Gumpper, Nov. 17-20 in the William Kelley High School auditorium.

Gumpper, whose sets and painting include those for the Minnesota Ballet, will lead participants in the painting of the actual scenery to be used in the LSCT musical production of "Grease." It will be Gumpper's ninth visit to Silver Bay to create this season's masterpiece.

The Thursday session will begin at 8 a.m. and will include Erich Richter's WKHS art students. That session will conclude in the early evening, even after students leave at the conclusion of the school day. The Friday and Saturday sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude in the early evening also. Sunday will be optional as scene painting may be completed by Saturday evening.

Participants who are artistically inclined are asked to participate as much as they can, bring a bag lunch, and be prepared to paint in stocking feet.

Grease will be presented April 13, 14, 15, 20, and 21 at WKHS, making it the community theatre's tenth anniversary production.

Questions regarding the workshop can be directed to "Grease" play director Paul Deaner at 218-353-7509.
