When it comes to deciding between two roads diverging in a wood, Two Harbors resident Katya Gordon always seems to take the less-traveled one.

In 2007, Gordon, her husband, Mark, and their two daughters, Cedar and Lamar, sold everything they owned and went on a 5,000-mile sailing journey from Lake Superior to the Bahamas. Now, five years later, Gordon has written a book detailing her family's adventure. Originally an extension of her blog, Gordon's book went through several evolutions.

"I realized it needed to be more of a story--of what it's really like to sail with kids," she said.

Before last Christmas, Gordon sent three chapters of her manuscript to North Star Press and was accepted. By the end of March, the final draft was done.

"It's a really good and humbling process working with a publisher," said Gordon.

"Big Waves, Small Boat, Two Kids" is Gordon's first book. She said she's not nervous.

"You put out your whole life," Gordon said. "I love it and I really believe it. I'm not afraid to be different. To be able to do that is what this book is about--we don't want to be afraid to take a risk."

Originally from Pennsylvania, Gordon and her family now have settled in Two Harbors after traveling and living throughout Minnesota. Gordon said that when she first arrived in Minnesota, she knew it was the place for her.

"I thought 'I have come home,'" she said.

But that didn't stop her from enjoying her family's adventures on the high seas. Gordon said exploring the culture of the Bahamas was beneficial for her daughters.

"Having our kids explore non-U.S. culture was important," she said.

She said the time she and her family spent with each other, and the bonds they formed with others during the journey, were significant.

"Friendships are really important. Nuclear family bonding is really important," Gordon said.

Gordon and her husband still sail today. This year marks the third year of their charter sailing business, Amicus Adventure Sailing.

The book launch party will be at the Bookstore at Fitger's in Duluth on May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.
