With last week's heat wave, it is hard to imagine crisp, cool evenings of fall. There are some indications of its arrival, though -- dashes of yellow in poplar trees, the scent of dry foliage and darkness by nine o'clock instead of the lingering light of midsummer. We may still be enjoying family recipes of baked beans at picnics and making easy refrigerator pickles from cucumbers from your garden. And what are some of your favorite ways of utilizing frozen berries during the winter?
All this is leading up to the subject of favorite recipes. Socially Active Seniors is putting together a cookbook of favorite recipes. With fall soon approaching, that makes me think of hearty soups and stews. Perhaps you have some tried and true easy ways of using your crock pot. Then there are casseroles and side vegetable dishes at the Thanksgiving table. Not to mention Christmas traditions of cardamom bread, gingersnaps and so much more.
What would you want your grandchildren and college students to be aware or? Are they eating a diet of mac and cheese, ramen noodles and pizza? Perhaps you can help them demystify preparing food from scratch. You can show them that sauces and gravy can be made in minutes and it's so much more economical! I am certain that you possess a wealth of knowledge worth perpetuating by contributing recipes to the SAS cookbook.
So, please think about it, write some recipes down and hand them to any of our board members or you can pop something in the mail and send it to Socially Active Seniors, P.O. Box 607, Two Harbors, Minn., 55616. We hope to collect all of the recipes by Oct. 1 so they can be printed in the book in time for our annual Harvest Dinner fundraiser to be held on Fri., Nov. 1. Wouldn't that cookbook be a perfect Christmas gift for someone you know?
