Voters to decide how county fills some positions
Todd Cullen and Don Graden, both of Two Harbors, dropped off a petition at the Lake County Courthouse on Friday which will likely put the question as to whether to appoint the auditor-treasurer and recorder on the ballot this fall. They said they had the signatures of 1,386 Lake County residents who opposed changes to the county’s policy regarding the process of filling the two positions.
In March, the Lake County Board of Commissioners approved a change that would allow it to appoint the positions after a bill passed the state legislature allowing them to do so. Prior to these decisions, the positions had been decided by the county’s voters. A vocal group of citizens took issue with the board’s decision and began gathering signatures on a petition. It needed 739 to get the issue onto the November ballot so voters can decide the matter.
According to the auditor’s office, the signatures have been verified and the question will be on the ballot during November’s elections.
