Sports roundup: Fynboh advances to state again
Update June 9, 10 a.m.: Leann Fynboh competed on Friday in the 400-meter dash at the state trakck meet at Hamline University in St. Paul. She didn't qualify for the final meet. Her time in prelims was 1:01.56, almost a half-second faster than her qualifying time at the Section 7A meet.
THHS baseball comes to a close The Agates were knocked out of the playoffs after losing to Virginia 4-3 on May 29.
Thanks to a double elimination system, the team had a chance even after losing to Aitkin in the second round. The loss against Virginia sealed the deal, though, and put an end to the Agates’ playoff hopes.
The team will graduate three seniors this year – Mike Nordean, Kyle Omtvedt and Mark Pearson. Next year will see a senior-heavy roster, with seven current juniors expected to return for the spring of 2015.
One trackster headed to state Junior Leann Fynboh is headed to the state track and field competition for the second year in a row after placing first in the 400-meter dash at the Section 7A meet. She missed qualifying in the 100-meter dash by just .9 seconds.
She is the only Agate to move on, but a few other athletes placed in the top 3. Sophomore Marina Schreiner placed third in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:34.11. Senior Eli Hebl placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.92. Claiming third in the 300-meter hurdles was freshman Ian Johnson with a time of 44.64.
The boys’ and girls’ relay teams both placed third in the 4x100 relay.
Karly Fleischer, Kirsta Keranen, Jessie Juenemann, Abigale Seipke, Marina Schreiner, Mia Minkinnen, Macey Jones, Krysten Linville, Katarina Hanson, Casey Cross, Drew Christensen, Davey Keranen, Shannon Lysaker, Jake Paron, Brandon Dugger, Zach Demming, Spencer Ross, Donovan Rigdon and Victor Fleischer all competed in the Section 7A meet after advancing through subsections.
Three Mariners also competed in the Section 7A meet, including Sammy Anderson, Hank Bemlott and Gunnar Frahm.
As a team, the Agate ladies placed 6 of 24 and the boys placed 7 of 22. For the Mariners, the boys came in 20th.
Fynboh will compete at the state meet this weekend.
