Two Harbors skiers at sections By Friday morning, we’ll know if any of the Two Harbors Nordic skiers have advanced to the state meet.
The skiers participated in the Section 7 Qualification Meet on Thursday at Giant’s Ridge. Ely, Duluth East and Mesabi East will be battling for the honor of first-place team at the meet for both the boys’ and girls’ race. The entire team of the winning squad advances, and the eight top-finishing individuals advance.
Sophomore Marina Schreiner will be looking for a qualification this year. She’s made big improvements, and if she has a strong race, she’ll have a good chance at state.
Junior Everett Hommes is the skier to watch on the boys’ side. Based on his performance in the Duluth East race and the Cook County Pursuit, he is a long shot but could pull off a qualifying race.
At the Duluth East Invite on Jan. 24, the boys placed 8th of 11 teams overall. The girls landed in 7th place of 9 teams. Schreiner led the girls with 17th place of 79 girls. Hommes led the boys, with a 20th place finish overall. Senior Owen Cruikshank was less than 20 seconds behind him.
At the Cook County pursuit on Friday, the boys were 7th of 9 teams and the girls were last of 7 teams. Schreiner placed 24th in a field of 84 and Hommes was 26th of 76 boys.
