Two Harbors prevails in North Shore basketball battle

On Friday night, the girls’ and boys’ basketball squads from Silver Bay headed to Two Harbors for a North Shore showdown. It was the first game of the season for the Two Harbors girls.

0 Talk about it

Both Two Harbors teams pulled off easy wins over the Mariners, starting with the girls at 5:45 p.m.. The Agates came out on top 55-12. Senior Krista Kerenan led the scoring for the Agates with 14 points. She was followed by senior Lane Schraufnagel with 11 points and freshman Brianna McGrath with eight points. Senior Brandi Nopola scored 8 points for the Mariners and junior Tara Dow had 4 points.

Agate coach Chris Lemke said the girls are getting the hang of a standardized defensive and offensive system he implemented last year. The girls will start learning the basics of the system in fourth grade, allowing them to practice more on skills and game planning as they progress.

The new system must be working as the girls won another math on Saturday against Ely 59-55.

“The game was very close and we had to come from behind to win a very exciting game,” Lemke said.

Keranen again led the scoring with 21 points. Junior Briana Stuberud had 15 points and freshman Ayla Lemke scored 8 points. The 2-0 Agates play at Cook County tonight, Denfeld tomorrow and have a home game next Tuesday against Carlton.

The Mariner girls, now 0-2, play McGregor tonight at home and Esko next Thursday at home.

The Agates boys’ squad easily topped the Mariners at 7:15 p.m., winning the game 67-25. For the Agates, junior Alex Lemke led the scoring with 25 points, including 5 three-point shots. Senior Kyle Omtvedt had 9 points, as did junior John Peer, Jr. Senior Eben Fisher led the Mariners with 10 points and sophomore Micheal Fisher had 8 points.

The boys will play each other again on Dec. 17 at Silver Bay.

On Saturday, the Agates lost to the Ely squad 53-80, leaving them with a 2-2 record. They play at Cook County tonight.

The Silver Bay boys lost their second game in a row on Monday, dropping a 25-59 match to Cherry. They are now 1-2 and face McGregor tonight.

North Shore hockey 2-1

The North Shore hockey team tallied a win and a loss at home over the weekend, bringing their record to 1-2.

The squad lost to Faribault at Rukavina Arena on Friday. Faribault scored three points in the first two periods, and an early goal in the third period by the Storm’s senior forward Tyler Schramm wasn’t enough to even it out. Senior goalkeeper Zach Duresky had 26 saves in the match and Faribault’s goalie had 30.

The boys tallied a solid win over Pine City in Two Harbors on Saturday, defeating them 4-0. Schramm started out the scoring at 6:02 in the second period and junior Quaid Cavallin scored another at 7:29, with help from seniors Corey Johnson and Jonah Koehler. Less than a minute-and-a-half later, junior Ryan Rasmussen accomplished an impressive short-handed goal, with the assist going to senior Luke Small.

Schramm scored the final point in the third period during a power play, with an assist going to senior Mills Johnson. Duresky had 12 saves and Pine City’s goaltender had 23 saves.

The Storm played Ashland yesterday at home and host Hayward at the Rukavina Arena in Silver Bay tomorrow. Next week, they head to Hibbing on Tuesday and Hayward on Thursday.

Girls’ hockey squad falls to Pequot Lakes

Adding a loss to their tally, the Mariner hockey squad is now 0-6-1. They had a three-hour road trip to Pequot Lakes on Tuesday and fell to the Patriots 0-3. The Pequot squad scored one point in each of the three periods and the Mariners couldn’t answer.

The Mariners were at Moose Lake last night and host Princeton tonight at the arena in Two Harbors. Tomorrow they host the Canadian Fort Frances team in Silver Bay.

Nordic ski season kicks off tomorrow

After last weekend’s meet was cancelled because of the cold, the Two Harbors Nordic ski team will race at its first meet tomorrow at Snowflake Ski Center in Duluth.
