No one was injured in one of two car fires last week in Two Harbors. The car had been parked at the time with no occupants.

It's been a busy year so far for Two Harbors Fire Chief Mark Schlangen. He presented a year in review to the city council last week. The 23 members of his department responded to 54 calls in Two Harbors and 56 outside of the city in 2009. Most calls came on car accidents, 22, and 18 calls were cancelled with firefighters in route. There were 10 structure fires, six vegetation fires, and six vehicle fires. The department had 1,351 hours on the job and 2,098 in training or practice. The department also donates time for fire prevention education and community involvement at events.

The fire department went through an interview process and a physical agility test for potential future firefighters this month. By the end of the evening, 11 candidates successfully completed the requirements and will be placed in a hiring pool for future openings. The department has a full roster but will draw from the hiring pool as openings occur.
