Partners in Living Well: Summer wrap-up
Kirsten Cruikshank, Community Partners Director
The fair weekend always reminds me that the end of the summer is near. Though I don’t want to accept it, I guess it is a good time to pause for reflection on summer activities, and look forward to some new events offered this fall.
It has been great to be involved in a number of “Age to age” activities this summer with the wonderful interns, Kara and Kiersten. Older adults were able to get help with their smartphones and computers over the summer on Monday mornings at the “Tech and Coffee” sessions. These sessions will happen again this winter at the Two Harbors High School. Watch your “Good News, Good Schools” for dates and registration information.
Another exciting program we started this summer is the “Walk with Ease” program. “Walk with Ease” is an Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program that can reduce pain and improve overall health. Our first class of six brave participants has been stretching and walking at the “Place” for four weeks. Community Partners will offer another class beginning in October. For more information call 834-8024.
I am happy to share that Arrowhead Transit is now offering a bus to the MN Vets Home in Silver Bay on the first and third Thursday of the month. For $5.00 people can catch a ride on the bus to visit their loved ones. The service will pick up people at their homes in Two Harbors beginning at 10 a.m. and return from the Vets Home at 1 p.m. The first trip last week had eight riders, which was great because they must have a minimum of five to make the trip. To reserve your spot on the bus, call Arrowhead Transit at 800-862-0175, option 3.
A new opportunity coming to Two Harbors is the “Bone Builders” Program. Bone Builders is an osteoporosis prevention education program for seniors. It offers a light fitness routine taught by volunteer leaders. If you would like to be a volunteer leader, a training will be offered by the local RSVP program on Wednesday September 3rd. Call Michelle at 834-2280 extension 4 for more information or to sign up.
A Hearing Loss Workshop will be offered on Wednesday September 17th at 1:30 at the Two Harbors Community Center. Presented by Cheryl Blue of the MN Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services office in Duluth, the workshop will offer information about equipment and resources to help people deal with hearing loss.
Later this fall we will need more volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels. If you are interested in working on this rewarding volunteer activity, call Community Partners at 834-8024.
