A line of thunderstorms has brought hail, gusty winds and torrential rain to much of the Northland today - and more strong storms are possible later today.

Storm reports relayed by the National Weather Service in Duluth included:

  • Penny-size hail and 40-50 mph winds on the east side of Duluth.
  • 68 mph wind gust recorded on the ship Algoma Progress on Lake Superior, 6 miles south of Castle Danger.
  • Half-inch-diameter hail and some trees down in the Pengilly area of Itasca County.

The storms dropped a quick inch of rain and pea-sized hail on the north side of Duluth. They prompted several special marine warnings for the waters of Lake Superior.

Additional strong, possible severe storms are possible across the Northland later this afternoon and this evening. Check back for weather updates.
