North Shore Library News: Aug. 8
Silver Bay Public Library News
Not long ago, a friend was diagnosed with a much misunderstood medical disorder. I could find the basic information on the WEB but soon exhausted the usual resources and wanted to dig deeper. Then I returned to the wonderful resources available at the Arrowhead Library System. http://www.arrowhead.lib.mn.us/
I clicked on the Services for Library Patrons link and then Magazines, Newspapers and Other Databases. I went to Home Access and then, voila! You may get led astray by the all the other options. If you’re looking for medical information you will just have to leave Small Engine Repair Reference Center, ChiltonLibrary.com, NoveList, HelpNow, JobNow, The Historical Minneapolis Tribune and many other databases for another session.
The amount of information I found on an otherwise obscure subject was amazing! Finally, I was able to help shed some light for a friend and her family who had been left feeling bewildered and overwhelmed. With ERIC a one word search resulted in hits from the present to 20 years ago. The articles were available as peer reviewed and full text. MedlinePlus combines reliable information from The National Library of Medicine (NLM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. MedlinePlus also consists of information on drugs and supplements, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive tutorials, the latest health news, and surgery videos.
EbscoHost, Academic Search Premier, MasterFILE Premier, Alt HealthWatch are just a few of the other excellent resources available for finding information on alternative and mainstream medical practices.
