Margaret Nelson Swanson
Margaret Swanson, age 94, passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, at Ecumen Scenic Shores Home in Two Harbors, where she had been a resident since April of 2010.
Margaret was the youngest and last surviving child of Norwegian pioneers, Nick and Julia Nelson, who settled at Silver Creek Cliff in the early 1900s. She lived her entire life on the north shore of Lake Superior.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Swanson, who passed away in 1987.
Margaret is survived by her five children: Michael Swanson, Robert Swanson, Gerald Swanson, Theodore Swanson and Elizabeth Helgeson, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Margaret was a life member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was active in earlier years with the Salvation Army and the Gospel Tabernacle Church.
Margaret attended school at the Silver Creek Country School and later Two Harbors High School, where she graduated with honors in 1936.
Margaret will be remembered as a loving mother, who cared deeply for her children. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and life on the north shore of Lake Superior. Margaret was a wonderful cook and homemaker. In her leisure time, she especially enjoyed playing card games and bingo with her friends.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Ecumen Scenic Shores Home for the excellent care they provided Margaret the last three years of her life. She was always happy and was honored by the staff in 2011 as the “Ecumen Scenic Shores Queen”. She was proud of her crown and the opportunity to be in the 2011 Heritage Days parade.
At Margaret’s request, she was cremated following a private family memorial service where Pastor Joseph officiated on Jan. 6.
