Local actors join RENT cast
The Lake Superior Community Theater commemorated its 10th anniversary this year and they have a lot to celebrate.
Two actors who've appeared in LSCT productions are moving to a bigger stage this month with roles in RENT at the Duluth Playhouse. The Children's Theater production will feature actors ages 12-19.
"We're proud that a couple of our kids are choosing this level of theater," Paul Deaner, executive director of the LSCT, said.
Kristine Greer, who just graduated from Kelley High School in Silver Bay, will play Maureen in the production. Eli Hebl, a Two Harbors High School junior, will play Angel.
Greer has been involved in theater since first grade and has been with the LSCT since it started. She plans to study theater in college.
Both Greer and Hebl have been rehearsing 35 hours a week since July 9. "They're really hard but they're really fun," Greer said of RENT rehearsals.
Hebl began in theater at age 7 when he was cast as Charlie Brown in the " Charlie Brown Musical." RENT has been his favorite play so far. "I've been singing the songs since I was young," Hebl said.
LCST has helped foster other local talent as well. Anna Sell, a former LSCT actor also appeared in a play at the Duluth Playhouse and now studies at Concordia College in Moorhead. Lura Wilson, a theater major at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, is also an alumna of LSCT.
The LSCT, which began in in 2002, has found unexpected success in Lake County. They perform one production per year, usually a musical. This spring it was "Grease", in which both Hebl and Greer acted. "Death of a Salesman" is slated to be next year's play.
"People are hungry for the arts up here," Deaner said.
RENT will be performed at the Duluth Playhouse Friday, Aug. 10 and 17, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 12 and 19, at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at www.duluthplayhouse.org or by calling (218) 733-7555.
