Lake Superior Community Theater play to be held in Two Harbors
Auditions will be held in September for Lake Superior Community Theater's production of Fiddler on the Roof. The musical is being staged in Two Harbors, a first for LSCT and a first for the Agate City.
"Two Harbors deserves to have great theater performed in the Two Harbors area," said LSCT , Executive Director Paul Deaner "Fiddler on the Roof is a great kick-off for Two Harbors area audiences."
The 1964 Broadway play centers around Tevye, a Jewish peasant, his wife Golde, and their five daughters in Anatevka, Russian-Jewish village.
"The play is about a family and a man grappling with changes in his family and society," Deaner said. "As beautiful as the play is, it also is bittersweet at the end."
Although audiences will have to wait until April to see the play, Deaner said it is necessary to hold auditions early.
"We need to find a strong, male adult to play the role of Tevye," he said, adding that he doesn't foresee a problem finding actors. "There is a strong market. We will definitely pull in a good cast."
While performances in Silver Bay will continue in the years to come, future productions in Two Harbors will depend on whether the community supports the play with volunteers and audiences.
"If the community wants that and if people want to pay money, then the answer is yes," Deaner said about the possibility of future productions. "So far, the school has opened its arms to us. The school, Mr. Archer, Community Education and the school district made it possible in Two Harbors."
With a decline in drama education in Lake County schools and the lack of funding, Deaner's concern is that if the community theater doesn't provide a certain level of a theater experience, it will never happen in Lake County.
"We have made it our mission to present high quality sustainable drama to Two Harbors," Deaner said. "We can't let this die."
