Judo tournament draws international competitors

The 14th annual Agate City Open Judo Tournament was held at the Two Harbors High School gym on Sunday, Feb. 9. The tournament which drew 34 competitors from the U.S. and Canada has been the final Winter Folic event for many years.
Competitors came from Thunder Bay,Ont., the Grand Rapids area, the Twin Cities and Two Harbors. Referees came from the Twin Cities and the Milwaukee, Wis., area. In honor of international guests, “O Canada” and the “Star Spangled Banner” were played to open the tournament.
Local competitors made a good showing, with excellent results in their divisions.
Kiviok Hight took first place in his division.
J.C. Holman and Alex Flynn had an exciting match for first place in their division. The match lasted for the regulation three minutes. Holman won the match on a decision and took first place, with Flynn taking second.
Cyrus Keithley-Meyers won three matches and lost two matches in his division. He is the most improved competitor this season.
Sam Miller took a third place in his division. This was his first tournament.
Upcoming tournaments include:
March: An inter club event in Grand Rapids to be scheduled.
April: A tournament in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin to be scheduled.
Saturday, May 3: The Minnesota State Championships in Eagan, Minn.
The North Shore Judo Club has classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Masonic Lodge in Two Harbors. Roger A. Anderson, a national level coach, is the head instructor. He may be contacted at 834-2368 for details. New students are welcome at any time.
