Hockey merger details announced
At Tuesday's School Board meeting, school officials presented more details concerning the merger between the Two Harbors and Silver Bay boys' hockey teams.
Locations for both practices and games will be split evenly between the two schools, half at the arena in Two Harbors and half at the arena in Silver Bay. On Wednesdays, practices will be held separately at both teams' home arenas so that they can finish up earlier by 6 p.m.
Coaches from both schools will continue to coach the team. The team will also continue to compete in the same single-'A' division of the Minnesota State High School League. They haven't decided on a team name or ordered uniforms. They also still need to figure out a schedule for practice times.
School officials predicted that there will be about 17-18 players from Two Harbors on the team and 12-13 from Silver Bay.
There will also be a slight change to the schedule for the girls' hockey team, which has been a combined team for four years. This year, two games will be scheduled at the Two Harbors arena. Last year, all home games were at Silver Bay.
Lake Superior School District School Board chairman Dwight Moe thanked the principals and athletic directors for working out the merger fairly. "You all have done a great job," he said.
New superintendent and THHS Principal in the works
The School Board also made a timeline for the selection of a new superintendent. Interim superintendent Shawn Northey will need to be replaced by August 1.
Applications were reviewed last Tuesdays meeting. Four to five candidates will be selected for interviews to take place next week. There will be two rounds of interviews.
Northey said interviews for position of Two Harbors High School principal were last Monday and a candidate will be selected soon.
