Gert's Dirt: Selecting the right vacuum for your needs
If you are shopping for a new vacuum cleaner, the task can be daunting! So many choices! Hundreds of dollars! How is anyone supposed to decide?
Here are some things to think about when choosing the best vacuum for your needs.
As you know, one of the best ways to care for your carpet and rugs is to keep them vacuumed. The sand and dirt that accumulate deep in the rug are very hard on the fibers. So it makes sense that suction is important. A larger upright or canister model with a powerful motor will get the job done.
Agitation helps pull the dirt from the carpet as well. A spinning brush is great for this. Be sure to clean the brush because hair and string get wrapped round the mechanism and hamper its cleaning power.
Do you have a combination of carpeted and bare-floor surfaces in your home? You will want a model that easily switches from one to the other with equal efficiency and ease.
Size and flexibility are important. If you have a lot of carpet, it is helpful to choose a vacuum cleaner model that has a larger head so it covers more of the carpet with each pass. On the other hand, a little head will fit in and around those smaller spots much more easily. Make sure the model will get into corners and along edges for thorough cleaning.
Find a vacuum that can easily transition from floor cleaning to jobs like dusting drapes and lampshades. For those purposes, you’ll want to look for a model that has easy-to-change on-board tools and variable suctions settings.
If you have a bad back or will need to tote the cleaner to different levels in your home, you may want to consider the weight and portability of the vacuum.
Bagless models are great because you never have to buy bags. Just press a button and release the dirt into a garbage receptacle. However, dirt contained in a bag means that your exposure to dust will be limited.
Hepa filters are best even if you don’t have allergies or asthma, but especially if you do. Many models have filters that you can remove and hand wash.
Next is to consider cost. Be careful here. You do not need to spend a ton of cash to get a good vacuum cleaner. At Gertie’s we love our vacuum. It is a Sharp Professional Navigater. It is light and easy to carry from place to place. It has crazy suction with a small maneuverable head. It pushes across the floor easily and does well on carpet and hard surfaces. It is bagless and has a hepa filter— all for under $200!
Do your research, ask questions and get the best vacuum to suit your needs and your budget. Your home and your pocketbook will be better for it.
