Duluth artist at Waterfront Gallery
Duluth artist Lisa Stauffer received her Master’s in design (University of Minnesota) and studied illustration at Parson’s School of Design. She has worked and taught in a wide variety of media.
Lisa now paints primarily in pastel with a special focus on painting en plein air to indulge her fascination with light and color in Minnesota’s beautiful north shore landscape. Lisa holds Master Circle status with the International Association of Pastel societies and is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America.Last year, February 2013, Lisa was one of a group of painters who took their canvases outside to capture the snow and ice for the Grand Marais Art Colony’s 4th Winter Arts Festival. She was quoted in a Duluth News Tribune article about the event. “Plein air is a French expression for “open air” or outdoor painting. The amazing subtlety of light on the snow is one of the prime motivations that bring us out to work to capture that beauty in a painting, she said.” Lisa, along with the group, braved the elements and produced winter scenes in paint and pastels with the aid of hand-warmers.Students know Lisa Stauffer as an art instructor, teaching regular workshops at the Grand Marais Art Colony in pastel still life and pastel plein air painting. Her classes cover painting fundamentals, subject design and compositional considerations, as well as education on the medium of soft pastel, the brands, papers, and techniques. Lisa participates in the annual Plein Air Competition in Cook County and won the “People’s Choice Award” in both 2011 and 2012. Her paintings have won awards in national competitions from New York City to California. In 2010 and 2012, her paintings were chosen for inclusion in the American Pastels Exhibit at the Butler Institute Of American Art. The exhibit runs through Aug. 30 at Waterfront Gallery, 632 1st Ave., Two Harbors, 55616. (218) 834-0756, www.waterfront-gallery.com.
