DECA invites you to mush for the hungry
The DECA students are at it again. After advancing to the international competition in Anaheim, Calif., last year, the students are hoping to continue their success. They are building a new public relations campaign to draw attention to a pervasive and often forgotten problem – hunger in the community.
“That’s why we do it, to bring it to the forefront,” said coach Julie Benson.
DECA is an organization that prepares students for careers in marketing, management, finance and hospitality. The students learn skills throughout the year and put them into practice in competition.
Last year, the students focused on bullying with their “See it, say it, stop it” campaign that brought bullying awareness to all the schools in the district. This year, they hope to make a difference for those who are at risk of hunger in the area..
The Northern Lakes Food Bank, with support from local faith communities and businesses, kicked off a backpack program in local schools this year. Students receive a backpack full of food on Thursday afternoons to help keep them fed over the weekends. The DECA students were surprised to learn that about 60 kids at Minnehaha Elementary in Two Harbors are food insecure – that’s about 1 of every 7 students.
DECA members held a fundraiser earlier this year, bringing a hypnotist to Two Harbors High School and collecting food and funds from attendees. More recently they decided to sign up for the Two Harbors Winter Frolic, too, and use a fun event to bring awareness and money to their cause.
“We thought the Winter Frolic would be a good place to have a little fun,” Benson said. “Hopefully, our message can get heard.” Their idea, Mush for Slush, is simple and promises to be fun for participants and spectators.
Teams will register in groups of five and act as sled dogs, running a short course behind Lake County Historical Society in Two Harbors’ downtown. The race will take place Feb. 8 and the winning team will receive gift cards from local businesses.
The entry fee is $50, and those interested can sign up at www.twoharborswinterfrolic.com. DECA is asking that people sign up before Jan. 27. Benson can be contacted at 834-8201 ext. 8353 with questions.
All the proceeds from the race will go to the Backpack Program.“We are asking physical activity. It’s about community and coming together and having some fun … and the entry fee is for a cause,” Benson said.
