Iron mining industry celebrates 130 years this summer
On July 31, 1884, ten 20-ton ore cars brought the first loads of Minnesota iron ore from Soudan to Two Harbors to be loaded on a ship and sent to across Lake Superior. The iron was the first of more than 62,000 tons of ore that were sent to Cleveland that year for processing. The first train was sent just hours after the last rail spike of the railroad from Soudan to Two Harbors was driven.
Today, 10 mining and processing facilities produce up to 40 million tons of Minnesota ore annually that is shipped around the world.
This year marks the 130th anniversary of iron ore mining in northeastern Minnesota. The event was commemorated with a celebration in Soudan on July 31.
