The girls started off 2014 with a pair of victories at Baudette over the Lake of the Woods Bears. They garnered their first wins of the season by rolling over the Bears 6-0 Friday night, with a repeat performance and an identical 6-0 score on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, Anna Carman had four goals and an assist. Tori Stevens added a goal and two assists. Kristiina Thums scored the other goal and Hattie Koehler, Madison Roy and Everly Bauck each had an assist. Sara Carman picked up the victory and shutout with 18 saves.
Game two saw Carman get a goal and three assists. Brooke McMillen scored twice to go with single goals from Roy, Cora Carter and Bauck. Roy’s goal was her first varsity goal. Samantha Anderson, Hannah Johnson and Thums added assists. Carman had 14 saves to get her second win and shutout in two days.
The North Shore Storm opened 2014 with an 11-1 win over the Ely Timberwolves in Silver Bay. The team scored four times in the first period and five times in period two as they cruised to the victory. Luke Small, with a hat trick and two assists, led the offense. Quaid Cavallin added a pair of goals and an assist, Ville Vuori, a goal and two assists, and Corey Johnson had three assists. Jonah Koehler, Thomas Anderson, Mills Johnson and Nick Johnson scored the other, along with Tanner Aho’s first varsity goal. Zach Duresky stopped 16 Ely shots to pick up the victory. Mark Killoran and Lori Huseby combined for 35 saves in the Ely nets.
The boys’ hockey game with Greenway, the girls’ game at Proctor and the girls’ basketball game at Babbitt were all postponed due to school closings. The Storm played Eveleth-Gilbert yesterday at Hoyt Lakes. The team is at Virginia on Tuesday and Ashland on Thursday. The girls hosted Moose Lake yesterday, host Eveleth-Gilbert Tuesday, Hayward on Thursday and International Falls on Friday.
The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams both host Cromwell tonight, and are at Cook on Tuesday to play North Woods.
The Thief River Falls girls’ hockey team and the Luverne boys remain unbeaten. The Lake of the Woods girls and Worthington are winless as are the Breckenridge, Ely, Morris/Benson and Winona boys.
