'Keg' death unsorrowed

The "Keg," which has played a leading role for the past 10 or more years in the debauchery of youth in the community, rang down the curtain Saturday night and the process of removing the machinery of production started yesterday. It is one of the first of 300,000 business casualties which are slated to go under as a result of the World War and the first of the local war.

The records of the Lake County Safety Committee credit the Keg with more traffic accidents between it and Two Harbors than any similar stretch of highway in Lake County. It became so terrific a year ago that the Board of County Commissioners took the place in hand and closed it up.

The plant equipment was subsequently purchased by Ernest Carlson and for nearly the past year he has operated the place on as decent a basis as such a place could be run and under his management little complaint has been voiced. He discovered to his sorrow that the place cannot be operated profitably except for the boost of illegal sale of liquor and gambling devices, and accordingly did not renew his lease.

The demise of the Keg will be recorded unsorrowed and unwept by the mothers and fathers of the community. Like grandfather's clock, it stopped short never to go again until old man Hillman dies.

Rail firm moving to Diamonds area

Movement of some personnel and locomotive servicing by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railroad in Two Harbors from the present depot near the foot of Sixth Street has begun, it was reported this week. The facilities are being moved to the Diamonds, just west of the city limits.

Move so far, railroad officials said, are the callboard facilities, plus the crew dispatchers and engineers board.

It appeared this week that the office of the railroad agent will not be moved until shortly before the start of the 1968 ore shipping season.

That office handles freight shipment orders and other matters of public interest, as well as distribution of paychecks and signing for unemployment compensation checks.

A delay in the transfer of transportation offices, now on the second floor of the depot, for at least a fortnight was also anticipated.

The railroad company has constructed an addition to the yard office building at the Diamonds to provide for the crew dispatching, train and enginemen's board and lunch and locker rooms, as well as facilities for the start and tie-up point for the train and engine crews. The point for fueling and servicing locomotives has also been moved to the expanded yard office.

Besides the addition to the yard office structure itself as an expanded parking area has been built.
