North Shore Highway 61 is gravel in places

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is reminding motorists that they will encounter two short stretches of gravel along Highway 61, near the Split Rock River, through Sept. 7.

One section will affect northbound and southbound traffic. The other section will affect only northbound traffic. Both sections will be repaved Sept. 8, but the gravel could cause traffic slowdowns until then.

The two-year reconstruction project in the Split Rock area is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Meanwhile, Highway 61 travelers also might notice work to sidewalks along the highway near Gooseberry Falls State Park. The pedestrian accessibility improvement project starts Tuesday but is not expected to affect road traffic.

The project will replace a stone sidewalk with a smoother-surfaced sidewalk that is accessible to people with disabilities. A temporary wooden boardwalk will be installed to provide access during construction of the new sidewalk. The boardwalk also will be accessible to people with disabilities.
